Even if Valentine’s Day is the most romantic day out of the entire year, February 14 puts an immeasurable amount of stress on couples to plan the perfect romantic evening. $200 prix-fixe dinners at fancy restaurants. Pricey weekend getaways. Jewelry so expensive you don’t even want to think about the final price tag. It all adds starts to add up to one high-priced holiday…which can be a problem for couples who are on a budget. But why not celebrate the day of love in a more simple and meaningful way at home this year? Here are a couple of tips to help you plan a romantic and budget-friendly Valentine’s Day evening for you and your sweetie!
1. Cook At Home
What’s that saying? The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach? Well, we’re pretty sure it goes both ways. Why not prepare a mouth-watering feast together for the big day? A few days before, sit down with your love and revisit some of your favorite recipes from the past. Chicken Cacciatore? Spaghetti and Meatballs? Your mother’s famous Pot Roast? Whichever recipe you choose, it should evoke positive memories from your past. Perhaps it reminds you of the first time you met, your first anniversary or a meal gone totally (and hilariously) wrong (hey, it’s time to redeem yourself!). Even if you don’t have a romantic recipe in your repertoire (try saying that phrase three times fast), we’ve chosen two recipes from Country Living that are sure to keep the romance flowing between you two: Tomato & Camembert Tart and Chicken With Lemon and Potatoes. Just make sure to create your shopping list ahead of time and round up your ingredients the day before, so you’re not stressing last-minute. That way once you’re in the kitchen, you’ll truly be able to work side-by-side in harmony and connect with your amour in a whole new way.
1. Order Takeout
If cooking sounds overwhelming to you during the workweek, there is always takeout. The beauty of today’s technology and the Internet is that there are dozens of websites with takeout deals for those of us who are pinching pennies. Groupon and LivingSocial offer daily deals on a variety of eateries—including local takeout. You might also look for specials and deals in your neighborhood on the Krazy Coupon Lady blog. Google is your best friend, here. All you need is a little creativity, an Internet connection and some serious Googling skills to find the best deals and coupons for Valentine’s Day!
2. Enjoy An Activity Together
You don’t need to spend a lot of money to enjoy a fun activity—because there is a lot to do in the comfort of your own home! Enjoy a movie marathon engulfed in your love’s arms. Play a board game or card game—a little healthy competition always heats things up! And if you prefer to spend time in the great outdoors, then head outside to your patio, balcony or rooftop deck to star gaze together. You can even make a game out of it to see who can name the most constellations!
The power of touch is important in any relationship—so why not take turns giving each other massages in your bedroom? Pick up some massage oil at your local drug store, or online, here. Even if you forget it, there is always lotion or even household staples like vegetable oil or coconut oil. (Although we recommend laying a towel down to protect your mattress!)
As you can see, you don’t need to spend a lot of money on fancy dinners or romantic weekend getaways to have a perfectly romantic evening with your honey. With a little bit of determination and some creativity, you can plan a night you’ll both remember without breaking the bank.
