While the weather forecasts for California look to be quite mild, New York City braces for the possibility that the magical balloon floats of the 87th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade may be grounded due to the threat of high winds. Thankfully, as Californians we will only have to wait until the start of the parade to know what the verdict will be — which is around 6 a.m. PST. So grab your favorite robe and hot beverage; here is our guide to for some of the things you should keep an eye out for during the broadcast of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
You can bet that Snoopy, along with his faithful companion Woodstock, will be making their 33rd appearance to the parade. However, it is sadly reported that some of the beloved characters, such as Shrek and Scooby Doo, are sitting this year out in order to make room for some new floats. One of balloons making it’s debut this year, Jake and Finn, from Adventure Time, will be taking a trip down 6th Avenue.
A Top float contender will be “Dreamseeker,” from Cirque du Soleil, which will be making its parade debut. It’s one of the tallest and longest floats, sitting at 52 feet long and 25 feet high. The enormous ship distinguished by magical antique wings is also outfitted with trampolines and poles, and more than 20 acrobats will dazzle the crowds as only Cirque du Soleil performers could while the float slowly winds its way down the streets.
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade wouldn’t be the same without some great television commercial spots, and this year will be no exception as Coldwell Banker brings the heartwarming We Believe TV ad to the extravaganza. Featuring the voice of none other than Tom Selleck, and the hit song “Home” by American Idol winner Phillip Philips, We Believe will be sure to touch the hearts of many.
While Spongebob has been a big part of the parade for nearly a decade now, this year he becomes appropriately festive with the addition of a Santa hat. Spongebob won’t be the only childhood favorite returning, the lovable Minions from the Despicable Me series will be bringing their antics to their parade once again. This year they tackle the threat of delicious baked goods and evil cupcakes in their themed float titled Despicably Delicious. Finally, what parade would be complete without the return of Santa Claus? Sleigh and all will be spreading yuletide goodness at the end of the parade, signalling the end of another years’ parade and the start of the final countdown to Thanksgiving Day meals.
In between all the excitement, many musical guests will also be making an appearance tomorrow. Performances will include:
- Ariana Grande
- Austin Mahone
- Gavin DeGraw
- Fall Out Boy
- Florida Georgia Line
- Fifth Harmony
- Jimmy Fallon and the Roots
