When the weather outside is frightful—(to Californians, that’s anything below 50 degrees)—snowbirds search high and low for warmer climes to soothe their freezing tootsies. Especially this year. Temps all over the country were dipping lower than they have in two decades; a cold, hard fact that makes snowbird getaways more valued than ever. Well, lucky for us, California is home to some of the best of those coveted destinations in the nation. Whether the perfect winter home is set in the pristine sunshine of the desert or right along the coastline, snowbirds have no problem finding their ultimate getaway spot in the Golden State. The only difficulty they may come across is which town to choose! But we’re here to help in that department.
Take a look at three of our favorite choices for Snowbird getaways, as well as beautiful homes available in each area. We predict your winters are about to get a whole lot brighter—and warmer.
Palm Springs is the quintessential snowbird destination with desert temps that hover in the 70s and 80s, days of pure sunshine and some of the most gorgeous golf courses in the nation. Yes, if you want to hide from the chill of winter, this is it. The area is also known for its top-rated dining scene (Spencer’s and Copley’s on Palm Canyon are big winners), spas like the rave-worthy Miramonte Resort and fantastic shopping options—yes, Palm Springs is the definition of snowbird paradise.
This 4,000-square foot spanish estate (below) was built in 1933 and is an absolute ideal winter getaway—and with six bedrooms and a two-bedroom guest house, there’s plenty of room for snowbird-friends and visiting family.

Carmel by the Sea
Carmel may not have the warm temperatures of the desert, but for snowbirds that think 60-degree temps are more than A-OK (especially when the rest of the country is in the single digits), Carmel by the Sea is the ideal refuge. The area is renowned for its walkable lifestyle, gorgeous beaches (most of which are dog friendly) and wonderful restaurants (try the exquisite Casanova or the charming Grasing’s). The only problem with Carmel is: you may never want to leave!
Can you imagine having this architectural gem (below) as your yearly snowbird escape? Four bedrooms/four baths, breathtaking ocean views and a spectacular Otter Cove setting…yes, please.

Just outside beautiful but busy Santa Barbara is the lovely seaside village of Montecito. This gorgeous, affluent town is the perfect winter home setting for snowbirds seeking a coastal getaway that feels peacefully remote, yet is close enough to the bustling activity of tourist-heavy Santa Barbara to satisfy any city whim. Within the town limits itself, Montecito features two shopping-dining areas, one a quaint village filled with boutiques, stores and restaurants and the other (Coast Village Road), a more upscale, yet decidedly laid back district with hotels, art, stores and ice cream/gelato shops. There are also opportunities for golfing, hiking and of course, endless beach relaxation.
If tranquility is your happily-ever-after, this stunning three-bedroom/three bath stone and wood home is your perfect find (see below). Ocean views, beautiful gardens and a path to the beach—this is the embodiment of Zen.
