Noisemakers twirled, confetti swirled and champagne glasses clinked as we welcomed in 2014 in all its glitz and glory. Now, it’s back to the grind—and of course, it’s time to start thinking about all of those New Year’s resolutions we so hastily promised ourselves while in the throws of celebration. Probably 80% of those well-meaning resolutions will go the way of the dodo bird (never to be seen again), but the ones that will make a difference to your very way of life—those are the resolutions you’ll want to keep. We’re referring to Home Renovation Resolutions, of course. From painting your living room to planting a garden, it’s easier than you think to achieve your 2014 plans.

Take a look at these five home renovation ideas that will refresh your home, revive your outlook and restore your faith in the power of resolutions.

Resolution 1: Get Greener

Saving on electricity bills, helping the planet, getting in on one of the most crucial movements in the universe—these are some good reasons to add some green elements to your home. You can either go with low-key changes like switching to CFL or LED light bulbs or starting a compost heap—or invest in major renovations like installing an insulated garage door or replacing your windows with low-emittance double-paned versions.

Resolution 2: Brighten Your Color Scheme

It’s amazing what a coat of paint or a few colorful additions can make to a room. Take note of your furniture’s existing color scheme, and then roll out a rug with a bold hue, paint one wall with a pop of fresh color or just add new lighting and a few accent pillows for a refreshing change.

Resolution 3. Spruce Up Your Kitchen

It’s time to finally make your kitchen the showpiece you’ve been dreaming about. And it doesn’t have to cost thousands of dollars to do it. Simply updating your kitchen cabinets by refacing them with a fresh look or installing new fronts can make your whole kitchen look totally different. Or add some beautiful hardware like a unique faucet, bring in some new lighting or simply place a few ornamental accessories around (fresh flowers and brightly colored bowls and vases) to give a touch of vibrancy to the space.

Resolution 4: Renovate Your Garage

The garage is really so much more than a place to park your car. If designed right, it can be an organized oasis of function and style. Paint your garage walls? It’s definitely allowed and welcome. And that cement floor you’re so used to? You could swap it out for an upgraded tile that looks amazing.  Shelving and storage hooks are a definite must for accessibility and organization and lucky for design lovers, there are some very chic options out there.

Resolution 5: Landscape and Garden

Your outdoor space should be just as inviting as your interior space and this is the year you’re going to make it happen. Add a rock garden with a soothing water feature to create a Zen atmosphere. Or discover the rewards of planting your own garden and grow vegetables and fruits the Farmer’s Market will envy. If you don’t have a big garden area available, there are easy solutions out there, such as as TogetherFarm blocks—a system that lets you put together your own garden box in any shape or size you want.
