Whoa, momma! Talk about sneaking up…Mother’s Day is this Sunday. Now, don’t get it twisted—our forgetfulness should not to be mistaken for not caring about the very person who gave us life. She is the one constant in our lives, after all. She hung our terrible 4-year-old stick figure drawings on the refrigerator with pride. She wore the “World’s Greatest Mom” T-shirt we gave her until it resembled a slice of Swiss cheese. She suffered through our torturous teenage years. She was…and is…probably the best friend we will ever have…a loving force in a dark and lonely world. YES. This very special woman deserves to be remembered and honored everyday, but most especially this Sunday.

Except we are seriously running out of time to show our appreciation with the perfect gift. Sure, we could order the old stand-by: flowers. But that’s too easy. Mom deserves more this year. She deserves something special. Something from the heart. Something beyond-the-bouquet. With only a mere 48 hours before the big day, we started to think about last-minute gifts that are local—either locally grown, locally made or locally conceived in California. We hope these six ideas will be your ultimate Mom’s Day inspiration. (There’s a little something for every kind of mom!)

1. Give Her Wine

This gift is for the mother who thinks there is nothing finer than a glass of Rosé. If you can still manage to get tickets, whisk mom away this weekend to the Meritage Resort and Spa in Napa for its 2nd Annual “First Blush” wine tasting event. The event spotlights California’s mom-friendly wines…you know…the Rosés, Sauvignon Blancs, Pinot Noirs, Rieslings and sparkling wines. (For guys, there are also a few local craft beers too). You’ve got two options for the weekend festivities: a tasting on Saturday, May 10 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. or a Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday, May 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Plus: you and mom will get to keep a commemorative First Blush wine glass (for memories…aw!). Tickets for the First Blush Taste the Lighter Side of Summer event are available for $30 here.

2. Give Her the Scent of a Woman

What to give the ultra chic mom who already has Chanel No. 5, Diorissimo and Clive Christian in her perfume collection? Why not help her create her signature scent? If you live in the Pasadena area, head down to Original Scent at 54 West Green Street this weekend, where you can work with a scent stylist to develop the perfect custom fragrance for mom. Just be prepared to answer questions like: What’s her favorite color, food, and time of day?! After getting a whiff of several essential oils that meet your criteria, your scent stylist will whip up a concoction right then and there. (Hint: you’ll get major points for creativity if you name mom’s new perfume. How about Mom No. 1 or La Meilleure Mère?) And don’t think you’re just limited to perfume either….you’ve also got your pick of candles, home fragrance products, body care and more.

3. Give Her a Spa Day

For the mom, who likes (or needs) to be pampered: it’s all about the spa day. Of course, you can give her a gift certificate to any spa in her local neighborhood. But we would be remiss if we didn’t supply you with at least one unique California-grown spa. If you happen to live in the San Diego area, then you’re in luck. Cal-a-Vie Health Spa in Vista is just the kind of place that will bring your mom not just relaxation, but perhaps a little enlightenment. Set on 200 rolling acres surrounded by lavender groves and lush vineyards, Cal-a-Vie Health Spa is known for indulgent spa treatments and luxurious accommodations, including antiques from the South of France including and a 400-year-old French Chapel. She’ll be able to soak in the sunshine, take morning hikes and even enjoy candle lit yoga classes. Ahh…C’est la vie.

 4. Give Her the Chance to Become a California Beauty

She already is a California beauty, after all. But why not make mom feel extra pretty this Sunday? New color cosmetics brand Make Colour’s Celeste e Verde collection ($23-$40), a collaboration with Los Angeles native and New York boutique owner Maryam Nassir Zadeh and makeup artist Ozzy Salvatierra, has a California-inspired palette of pastels, earthy reds and ocean blues that we just love. With creative packaging inspired by stills from an accompanying short film shot in L.A. that reinterprets 1964 Italian film “Red Desert,” you can pick up the “Celeste e Verde” eye shadow and lipstick palette for just $50 at Barney’s New York in Beverly Hills, (310) 276-4400 or in San Francisco, (415) 268-3500. Bonus points for you: Make Colour donates 33% of proceeds to women-led cooperatives in the U.S.

5. Give Her Something You Made

For the mom who kept an album of pressed flowers from her childhood garden—this one’s for her: a DIY pressed flowers phone case. (We first came across this idea on the Etsy blog last year, and we’ve been waiting to use it in a blog ever since!) Snag a few sunflowers from her personal album…or pick a few of her favorite buds from your own backyard garden to make your own using resin and basic crafting supplies. Even if you’re not crafty, Clare McGibben’s tutorial will be your perfect step-by-step guide. Mom will love it. (And even if she doesn’t, she’ll love it because you made it. Awww.)

6. Give Her Something to Warm Her Heart (And Stomach)

Forget trying to get a brunch reservation this weekend. Instead, why not make her waffles or a frittata right https://www.californiahome.me/wp-admin/post.php?post=14160&action=edit&message=10at home? (Those are locally made, right?) A meal made from the heart often speaks louder than words (and perhaps flowers), after all. Try some of these mouth-watering breakfast recipes from these local L.A. chefs or some of these creative a.m. numbers from top San Francisco chefs. For extra credit, top mom off with one of these brunch-worthy cocktails from Martha Stewart for a feast she will never forget.
