Is there anything that says summer eats more than a good, juicy burger? Especially in the heart of the season when barbecues are fired up, beaches are overflowing and aside from sunning and surfing, all we want is to dig into the perfect burger. And boy, can our state deliver on that!

Maybe it’s the fresh ingredients…or the innovative additions…or in some cases, the award-winning chefs that make our burgers so blissful—whatever it is, we are blessed with it all and our burgers are proof that California really does do everything better.

So, in honor of (the tail end) of National Grilling Month—and for the pure love of eating, we’ve compiled a list of 5 of the hottest burger joints in the state. If you’re ready to give in to your burger cravings, these are the places to do it right.

1. Habit Burger

Habit Burger

Once upon a time, Habit Burger was a well-kept and delicious secret, but since Consumer Reports rated it the Best Tasting Burger in America—folks from all over are scampering down to see what all the fuss is about. And they won’t be disappointed. Try their signature Charburger—fresh 100% ground beef, chargrilled over an open flame, topped with mayonnaise, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce and caramelized onions.

California Locations: All over: San Mateo, Walnut Creek, Fresno, San Luis Obispo, Stockton, Los Angeles, Glendale, Burbank and more.

2. Comme Ça Restaurant

Comme Ca

An all-American staple at a French restaurant? Oh yes, The New York Times called The Comme Ça Burger “the Perfect Burger”—and once you taste it, you just may agree. The $18 burger (yes, $18) is made with pure prime beef, Vermont cheddar cheese and a lovely coleslaw topping set on a brioche bun. It is divine—expensive, but divine.

California Location: West Hollywood

3. Gott’s Roadside

Gott’s Roadside has become a Northern California classic with what Food & Wine magazine has named one of the Best Burgers in America. Using primarily locally sourced ingredients, their burgers are 100% Angus Beef (zero hormones or antibiotics) and finished off with the freshest toppings. Add on a Napa Valley Cabernet to wash it all down and you have one amazing meal. *They’re also known for their great Ahi Tuna Burger—so fish lovers, give that a go!

California Locations: Napa, St. Helena, San Francisco and Palo Alto

4. The Plant Café

Plant Cafe

There are a lot of burger purists out there that say a true burger has to have meat in it. But once you try the Plant Café’s famous Plant Burger™, you may have to reassess your opinion. Made of beets, mushrooms, lentils, bulgur wheat and cashews—this red-colored patty is full-on fabulous. It’s topped with grilled onions and vegan aioli and served on a sourdough bun.

California Locations: San Francisco (4 locations), Burlingame and Mill Valley

5. In-N-Out Burger

In n Out

It is 100% impossible to have a “best burger” list without including In-N-Out—possibly even illegal (that’s how much we love our In-N-Out). Whether your pick is Animal Style, a ridiculously big 4×4 or just your run of the mill Cheeseburger, you’re going to relish every bite and lick every finger when you’re finished. Don’t fight it—it’s the In-N-Out love affair and we all have it.

California Locations: Everywhere!
