Dining out is one of life’s great pleasures. No prep work, no cooking, no dishes—there’s nothing better. And if your favorite companions are joining you, it really is the perfect restaurant outing. Especially when was of the companions is your best friend…you know the one: floppy ears, wagging tail, prances on four legs, occasionally begs for a bite of your food? Yes, that best friend. For dog lovers everywhere, the best restaurants out there are the ones that welcome even the furriest diners. And thankfully, California is filled with places that do just that.
It wasn’t easy, but we narrowed down the dog-friendly list to 9 of the most woof-worthy dining establishments in the state. So tell Sir Bark-a-Lot to put on his best collar, because he’s in for some restaurant love. Take a look!
1. The Waffle
6255 Sunset Boulevard
Hollywood, CA 90028
For a real treat for you and your pup, head to The Waffle’s outdoor patio for a Vegetarian Philly Sandwich, a Waffle Ice Cream Sandwich and a delectable order of Woofles (dog treats made with parmesan, parsley and whole wheat flour) for your pal.
2. Real Food Daily
414 N. La Cienega Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90048
Real Food Daily is one of L.A.’s best vegan restaurants, and while they may not offer dog treats with their Tu-Nut Salad, they do welcome your pup on their outdoor patio (and will even bring out a nice bowl of water to keep him hydrated & happy).
3. Savoy Café & Deli
24 W Figueroa St
Santa Barbara, CA 93101
Delicious food, prime Santa Barbara setting and dog friendly? Yes, please! This place has amazing natural food (all organic produce, hormone & nitrate-free foods and vegan & gluten-free options) and a lovely patio so puppy can join you. You can even order him an organic turkey sandwich while you enjoy a salad from their award-winning salad bar.
4. The Patio on Lamont Street
4445 Lamont Street
San Diego, CA 92109
The Patio on Lamont Street is without a doubt, one of the most dog-friendly dining spots around. Even their blog states: “Not sure if you’ve noticed yet, but we here at the Patio on Lamont really love dogs and are one of the most pet friendly restaurants in Pacific Beach, if not all of San Diego.” They even have gourmet house-made dog biscuits and bowls of water just waiting for your best buddy.
5. Bluewater Grill
630 Lido Park Dr
Newport Beach, CA, US 92663
If great water-views are your dog’s favorite pastime, head to an outdoor table at Newport Beach’s Bluewater Grill. Grab some excellent seafood for yourself, and feel free to order your pal a Bluewater Burger (without the onions, or course).
6. Forge in the Forest
SW Corner of 5th Avenue & Junipero
Carmel, California 93921
Carmel is basically the pet-friendly capital of the state, so it’s no wonder that Forge in the Forest is a bit of a doggy haven. Not only do they have a nice seating area for dogs and their people, but they even have a Canine Cuisine Menu so your pooch can feast alongside you.
7. Half Moon Bay Brewery
390 Capistrano Rd.
Half Moon Bay, CA 94019
There’s a reason Half Moon Bay Brewery won the 2014 Beast of the Bay Award for Best Dog-Friendly Restaurant: this place loves dogs! Stop in, sit out on the patio and let your pooch enjoy house-made dog treats and (likely) more than a few ear scratches from the dog-loving staff. Oh, the food and beer is great, too!
8. Duboce Park Cafe
2 Sanchez at Duboce
San Francisco, CA 94110
Stop in at Duboce Park Café and you’ll know instantly why it’s on the list…the outdoor patio is filled with dog people (and their dogs). Not to mention, the food is fresh and delicious, the smoothies are dreamy and if your pup is hungry, you can split a ham and cheese croissant with him! Plus, there’s a dog on the restaurant logo—really, need we say more?
9. Rosie’s Cafe
571 North Lake Blvd.
Tahoe City, CA 96145
Tahoe’s Rosie’s Café may only be seasonally dog friendly (ever try to sit on an outdoor patio in Tahoe in the dead of winter?), but in prime-time summer, it’s the place to be. Order poochie a burger off the kiddie menu and order yourself something sinful like the Chicken Fried Steak. Don’t worry, you’re in Tahoe—you can hike the calories off later.
