24/7 Wall St is now aware of what we have long known: Mountain View and Pleasanton are exceptional places to live. In fact, they’re not just exceptional; they’re the best.
The two Bay Area cities were just named among America’s 50 Best Cities. 24/7 Wall St reviewed data on “550 cities with populations of 65,000 or more as measured by the U.S. Census Bureau” to come up with a list of 50 cities. Data was “based on a range of variables, including crime rates, employment growth, educational attainment, and housing affordability.”
Mountain View was No. 3 on the list, noted for its “low crime rates, strong-performing schools, highly educated population, and healthy job market.”
Pleasanton followed at No. 4, lauded for its safety, high household earnings, quality education, and unemployment rate that “was just 3.7% last year, also among the lowest rates nationwide.”
The job market weighed heavily on the list and “was one of the key measures we used to identify the best cities,” said 24/7 Wall St. Local amenities were also a factor.
“Many of the best cities are located near major cities, as this proximity provides residents with access to good schools and safe neighborhoods, while also allowing them to enjoy the amenities available in the nearby larger cities.”
Mountain View’s amenities make the city particularly attractive, according to the data. As part of Santa Clara County, Mountain View “offers access to numerous amenities, including more than 3,500 restaurants and 216 gyms and fitness centers as of 2012. As of 2012, Santa Clara County had more than 3,500 restaurants and 216 gyms and fitness centers. Additionally, as of this year, residents can also watch the San Francisco 49ers at their new stadium in Santa Clara.”
Pleasanton rated highly in many of the most important categories. “Like many of the best cities to live in, Pleasanton is relatively safe,” said the report. “There were less than 70 violent crimes per 100,000 residents in 2012, among the lowest rates nationwide. A typical household earned more than $112,000, more than all but a handful of U.S. cities.”
Newton, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston, topped the Best Cities list. It’s a good thing for them weather wasn’t included as a factor.
