You set a certain budget for your house hunt—and you can’t go a penny over it. But what if you want to expand your search a wee bit beyond a specific neighborhood? We decided to play the comparison game by exploring what you can buy for a certain dollar value in various California neighborhoods in a new series we’re calling “Cali Comparables.” We’re going across the Golden State to give you an idea of how far your dollar goes in certain areas.

For our first post, we’re headed to the San Francisco Bay Area’s East Bay, where Contra Costa and Alameda counties have been setting wild new records for home sales and prices this year. We have set the asking price at $900,000 or slightly under. (And yes, we know how the realesanity goes in the Bay Area—demand is such that these homes may sell over their asking price, pushing them closer to $1 million mark in the end—but you get the idea. If you’re looking for a house in the East Bay, we’re pretty sure you’ve adjusted your budgets accordingly.).  Let’s take a look:

Cameron front

10925 Cameron
Oakland, CA. 94605
$898,000

There’s lots of benefits to having a single-level home. This Oakland-area Chabot Highland Estate home makes the case with its nice indoor/outdoor flow, three bedrooms, two and a half baths, two fireplaces and a spacious yard. New(ish) appliances and fixtures on the inside sweeten the deal, and there’s even some partial views waiting for you.  Oh, and did we mention there’s space for parking for your Airstream? That’s a definite plus.

2802-East-Hayward

2802 East Avenue
Hayward, CA. 94541
$829,000

Well, here’s a sweet little gem in Hayward’s Fairview area. If you were ever space-strapped in the city, you’ll have plenty of room to spread out in this home’s 3,400 square feet, five bedrooms, three baths and bonus room.  Other improvements made to the property include rebuilt trusses, roof, gutters, updated electrical panel, drought-conscious landscaping, newer water heater and furnace. As an added bonus, there’s a living room downstairs with a separate entrance—perfect for your live-in mother in-law…or adult-avoiding teenager. The yard and deck give it a nudge.

613-Bali-Ct
613 Bali Ct
San Ramon, CA. 94582
$879,000

Remember what we were saying about Bay Area real estate realesanity? This proves our point: this Craftsman-inspired stunner in San Ramon’s desirable Country View neighborhood already has a pending contract. We can’t say we’re surprised: it’s got 1,879 square feet, three bedrooms, two baths with gorgeous views of the Las Trampas Hill and stellar curb appeal. (Did we mention the views?) Inside, there’s also beautiful hardwood floors, stone work and a large backyard with a pool, entertainment decks and play areas.
