The color gods have spoken and in a surprising twist, Pantone has selected not one but two colors, Rose Quartz and Serenity, as the 2016 Color of the Year. Thank goodness we can forget about last year’s heavily debated earthy shade of wine and start focusing on this refreshing and harmonious duo. Which when paired together is more reminiscent of a beach sunset than the nursery images blue and pink typically conjure up.

Rose Quartz (Pantone 13-1520) is a “persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and sense of composure.” The warm shade of pink will go nicely with metallics as we round out the winter season as wells as spring florals. Serenity (Pantone 15-3919) is “weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.” Adding this soft blue hue with a slight hint of periwinkle will create a tranquil and spa-like setting.

“Joined together Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute®. In other words, the blending of these colors intends to evoke a feeling of tranquility and inner peace.

Challenging the traditional perceptions of color association, combining these beauties reflects the current gender blur the world is experiencing as it relates to fashion. Controversial as the choice may be, we think these colors –may that be on their own, combined with other shades, or eloquently paired together—will be simply stunning for any interior design project.

Rose Quartz and Serenity work well for rugs and upholstery as well as paint selections and decorative accessories including pillows, throws, and tableware. Styling your space with these subtle color accents will bring a feeling of calm and relaxation. Try translucent, glazing, matte, and metallic finishes for an optimal effect.
