You set a certain budget for your house hunt—and you can’t go a penny over it. But what if you want to expand your search a wee bit beyond a specific neighborhood? We decided to play the comparison game by exploring what you can buy for a certain dollar value in various California neighborhoods in a new series we’re calling “Cali Comparables.” We’re going across the Golden State to give you an idea of how far your dollar goes in certain areas.
You’ve heard the comparisons. Oakland is the Brooklyn of the Bay Area. Record numbers of homebuyers are crossing the Bay Bridge hoping to find an affordable place to live, and are driving up home prices in Oakland neighborhoods in the process. The median home price for homes in Alameda and Contra-Costa Counties jumped 16.7% and 12.9% in January from a year ago, according to the latest available figures from the California Association of REALTORS. Earlier this year, Zillow forecasted that the hottest neighborhoods in the San Francisco metro area for 2016 were…wait for it… all in Oakland. Tech companies are leading the boom too, as Uber and other start-ups are making the move across the Bay. (In two other reminders of the East Bay’s unprecedented surge, the “cheftestants” from Bravo’s “Top Chef” Season 13 made a memorable tour stop in Oakland earlier this year and USA Today named it the top West Coast food city last summer.) So, yeah. Oakland is hot right now. Red hot.
Knowing all of that, how much house you can afford in Oaktown with a budget of $1.5 million (or slightly over/under)? Let’s explore:
Two words: sophisticated and stunning. Two more words: dramatic and contemporary. This spacious four-bedroom residence spans 4,616 square feet and boasts beautiful scenic bay views. It was tailor-made for entertaining, thanks to a gorgeously appointed chef’s kitchen, luxurious master suite, decks with a hot tub and a terraced landscaped backyard. Bonus: it has an elevator!
Haven’t you always wanted to live in an “urban oasis”? Set on an extra large lot, this architecturally distinct three-bedroom Mediterranean offers great walkability around the corner from Montclair Village with shops and restaurants. Inside, you’ve got approximately 2,898 square feet of living space and Old World elegance with vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors and arched windows.
12 Starview Dr, Oakland, CA 94618 | $1,300,000
Epic San Francisco and bay views. That’s the main selling point of this chic and private townhouse. The light-filled interiors span up to approximately 2,772 square feet and boast soaring ceilings, recessed lighting, plantation shutters and hardwood floors. The beautifully remodeled kitchen — granite countertops, Viking gas cooktop, double ovens and wine cooler — overlooks the living room with views. The bonus room could serve as a third bedroom with attached bath and closet.
