You set a certain budget for your house hunt—and you can’t go a penny over it. But what if you want to expand your search a wee bit beyond a specific neighborhood? We decided to play the comparison game by exploring what you can buy for a certain dollar value in various California neighborhoods in a new series we’re calling “Cali Comparables.” We’re going across the Golden State to give you an idea of how far your dollar goes in certain areas.

Sacramento County, one of Northern California’s most recognized areas, offers its residents the best of both worlds thanks in part to its central location between San Francisco and Lake Tahoe. Sacramento County residents are able to enjoy the proximity of San Francisco’s urban city life while still being close enough to escape to Lake Tahoe’s mellower, rural atmosphere.

That’s not to say that Sacramento County doesn’t have a lot to offer, because quite the contrary, this area is a great place to get a taste of everything: from art museums, to music festivals, to world-class universities and state landmarks, there is certainly no shortage of spark in this dynamic area.

Thanks to these great qualities, and the fact that real estate prices are much lower in the Sacramento area compared to the majority of urban counties in the state, many people have made the move to this Northern California hub. In result of this migration, the county has become a very hot place to purchase real estate.

The median home price in the city of Sacramento has gone up 11.8% over the past year, according to the latest figures from Zillow, making the median home value $262,300.

The rest of the county has experienced similar growth, and its overall median home price is now $297,300, a 9.7% increase from last year.

That being said, we were curious to find out what a $1 million budget, (or slightly over/under), can get us in this developing area. Here’s what we found:
