Cali Comparables: What $2.5 Million Buys You in Marin County

You set a certain budget for your house hunt — and you can’t go a penny over it. But what if you want to expand your search a wee bit beyond a specific neighborhood? We decided to play the comparison game by exploring what you can buy for a certain dollar value in various California neighborhoods in a series called “Cali Comparables.” We’re crisscrossing the Golden State to give you an idea of how far your dollar goes in certain areas.

This week, we’re coasting upstate to Marin County — one of the wealthiest counties in the nation and perhaps best known as the home to George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch. Setting our budget at $2.5 million (and slightly under), we’re going to look at three distinct homes in Kentfield, San Anselmo and Sausalito.

75 Berens Drive | Kentfield, CA 94904 | $2,375,000

Commuters from the city may especially appreciate this rebuilt four-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath home in highly coveted Kentfield Gardens. Set just a mere few blocks from award-winning schools this residence is close to both Kent & Bacich, COM and Woodlands Market. Despite its conveniences, it still feels worlds away, thanks to a large, level front and back yard with mature landscaping anchored by two picturesque Japanese maple trees. If you’re the kind of person who appreciates the natural beauty of Marin County living, then look no further than the large master suite with a view of Tam. A spacious family room and kitchen offer opportunity for togetherness. Other pluses: “it’s light and bright throughout with great flow,” says listing agent Shane Attell of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Greenbrae.

711 Fawn Drive | San Anselmo, CA 94960 | $2,400,000

This peaceful oasis in San Anselmo is ideally set between gorgeous California wine country and the bay — in fact, you have a view of Napa and the bay to the Berkeley Hills! Four bedrooms and three baths offer plenty of room to grow. There is level access to gardens, the full-size swimming pool, spa and patios from the living areas. The large, light-filled and newly remodeled kitchen shines with quartz counters. The master suite has a private deck and faces a bay and sunrise view. Another bedroom suite has a separate entrance and private deck —perfect for au pairs, in-laws or guests. And the icing on the cake? It’s located near Marin County’s renowned open spaces for hiking, biking and dog walking. According to listing agent Jen Pennington of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Mill Valley-Southern Marin,“it’s a must-see.”

89 Crescent Avenue | Sausalito, CA 94965 | $2,495,000

When you picture Marin County living, Sausalito might be the first city that comes to mind. This contemporary stunner — known as the “Trestlehouse North” — embodies the relaxed-yet-modern coastal lifestyle of this breezy town in every way. Positioned just over the Golden Gate, a few blocks from downtown Sausalito and minutes from San Francisco, this residence has three bedrooms, two-and-a-half baths and panoramic views of the charming Sausalito homes nestled within the hillside and along the San Francisco Bay, Bay Bridge, Treasure Island, Alcatraz and the East Bay Hills. The home frames a fern-lined green gully and a gentle brook, which creates a natural, soft waterfall at the home’s entrance and yards. Listing agent, Candace Nordstrom of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Greenbrae, sums it up in word: “Stunning!”
