Interior Design: Bathroom Trends for 2016

When embarking on a remodeling project, it is good to follow trends without sacrificing the appeal of timeless design elements. Following are some of the hottest bathroom trends for 2016 that should stay in style for decades to come.

Are you tired of a dingy, outdated bathroom? Perhaps you’re searching through upcoming bathroom trends to improve the value and aesthetic of your DFW home. When embarking on a remodeling project, it is good to follow trends without sacrificing the appeal of timeless design elements. Following are some of the hottest bathroom design trends for 2016 that should stay in style for decades to come.

Undermounted Sinks

According to HGTV, based on the National Kitchen and Bath Association’s survey of the hottest bathroom trends for 2016, undermounted sinks will continue to reign supreme when it comes to minimalist and transitional design. An undermounted sink is installed beneath the countertop creating a seamless, clean line — especially when viewed from a distance.

The undermounted sink is quite a contrast from the trend where vessel-shaped and abstract sinks rested on top of counters a few years ago. According to Angie’s List, undermounted sinks will continue to be the hottest bathroom vanity trend and will keep replacing vessel-shaped and over mounted sinks in the coming years.

Frameless, Open Showers

The days of showers with harsh brass or stainless trim are numbered. Frameless showers are all the rage — especially those without a threshold. Offering an open, roomier feel, a frameless shower encased by glass complements many design styles, including traditional, transitional, and modern. Some designers are even combining the bathtub and the open, frameless shower concept to create a designated “wet room” space. This option normally consists of a sleek bathtub placed flush against a wall, preferably with natural light above it, and then extending the shower space a few feet outward, which encases the entire area in seamless glass.

Neutral Colors

The National Kitchen and Bath Association survey noted that neutral color palettes were a dominant upcoming trend. Various hues of white and gray accentuated by wood cabinetry and high-end fixtures provide a spa-like atmosphere. Contrast and dimension can be added to a neutral color scheme by using glass tile or porcelain with linen textures to keep a space lively and inviting without resorting to bright colors that might become dated in a few years.

Freestanding Tubs

Large circular, square, or oval shaped garden tubs (with or without jets) nestled in a corner of a bathroom are no longer stylish according to HGTV. Instead, a freestanding tub can become a luxurious yet clean and modern focal point for a bathroom. While these bathtubs can still feature jets for relaxation and plenty of room to unwind, their clean lines and positioning provides a modern twist on luxurious bathing.

Tile Patterns and Materials

Building Design and Construction highlights ten upcoming trends for bathroom wall and flooring tile. According to them, you can expect to see herringbone and chevron patterns; tiles boasting subtle linear design to add texture and contrast; glass mosaics in oceanic colors; and ceramic and glass tile featuring three-dimensional patterns with wavy and ridged textures.

While not every trend has staying power, sticking to neutral colors that appeal to everyone and drawing on inspiration from tried and true classics like custom cabinetry and light quartz or marble countertops can help you create a modern space with timeless elegance.
